On Friday, March 12th, the Southern Athletic League held its first meet of the season at Waterford High School, where athletes from various schools showcased their skills in an exciting series of races and field events. The event was filled with impressive performances across all categories, as competitors pushed themselves to achieve new personal bests and earn spots on the podium.

Top Performances of the Day

The standout athletes of the meet included Julian Garcia, who clinched 1st place in the boys' 200 meters with an impressive time of 24.63 seconds. Garcia also played a crucial role in the boys’ 4x100 relay team, alongside Marco Rios, Miguel Moreno, and Andres Aguilar, who took first place with a time of 46.33 seconds.

In the girls’ field events, Diana Mascorro soared to victory in the triple jump, landing a remarkable distance of 25’ 11.5” to take first place. Mascorro also earned 5th place in the long jump with a jump of 12’ 4”, demonstrating her versatility in the field.

Strong Finishes Across the Board

Miguel Moreno had a standout day as well, taking home 2nd place in both the boys’ 100 meters (12.07 seconds) and 200 meters (25.21 seconds), showcasing his speed and consistency. Paola Alvarez also earned a 2nd place finish in the girls’ 400 meters, crossing the line in 1:10.84.

The girls’ 4x100 relay team, consisting of Geraldine Reyes, Paola Alvarez, Athina Higareda, and Anahi Granados, showed remarkable teamwork, taking 2nd place with a time of 54 seconds.

More Notable Placements

Several athletes earned commendable 3rd place finishes. Alexis Rodriguez ran a strong race in the boys’ 400 meters, finishing in 59.28 seconds. The boys’ 4x400 relay team, including Miguel Moreno, Jorge Diaz, Julian Garcia, and Alexis Rodriguez, earned 3rd place with a time of 4:13.94. For the girls, Geraldine Reyes finished 3rd in the 200 meters with a time of 31.30 seconds, and Andrea Arroyo jumped 12’ 5.5” to place 3rd in the girls’ long jump.

Team Efforts and Promising Results

The boys’ 4x100 relay team, including Fernando Garcia, Ethan Manzo, Alexis Rodriguez, and Jorge Diaz, earned 5th place with a time of 49.55 seconds. In the girls’ 800 meters, Kimberly Villa took 5th place with a time of 3:11.47, while the girls’ 4x400 relay team, made up of Kimberly Villa, Sienna Rivera, Angie Hernandez, and Andrea Arroyo, finished 3rd with a time of 5:19.82.

The meet was an exciting start to the track season, with athletes already showing their potential. As the season progresses, these performances are sure to inspire even more success in future competitions.
